The Chitalpa Butterfly Garden palette is centered on the Pink Dawn chitalpa tree and Desert willow tree. Pink Dawn chitalpa is hybrid between Catalpa bignonioides, Common catalpa, and Chilopsis linearis, Desert willow. Both of these trees are well suited to residential scale gardens and are appreciated for their flower colors and summer shade. They also have value in attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden.
This garden palette is designed to offer a rich diversity of butterfly-attracting flowering plants for many sizes of residential spaces with many combinations of colors, textures and design uses. These plants can be combined with organic mulch, gravel or decomposed granite and help reduce the size of water needy lawns. This diversity helps achieve year around visual interest and habitat and food for birds and butterflies.
