The Star jasmine is a vigorous evergreen vining plant with glossy dark green foliage. When grown as a vine, its stems can reach 25-30 ft. in length; it can also be clipped and maintained as a ground cover 18-24 in. tall. Leaves are elliptical in shape, have pointed tips and grow 2-3 in. long; large clusters of deeply fragrant and attractive white flowers occur in late spring to early summer.
Star jasmine is best known for its sweet flower fragrance in Southern California gardens. While this fragrance provides a dominant feature, glossy dark green foliage and manageable growth habit helps make it a popular plant in both commercial and residential landscapes. It has proven to be highly adaptable to cold and heat, sun and shade and a variety of soil types. However, it grows best in loamy soils, with regular moisture and protection from hot sun to keep its rich color and prolong its flowering cycle. It can cover large and small spaces as a ground cover, be trained on trellises and can cascade over walls and banks.
