The Coral plant, also known as the Firecracker plant, is a sprawling evergreen subshrub with arching green stems and tiny scale-like leaves, growing 3-4 ft. tall and 4-6 ft. wide. Intense coral-red tubular flowers occur in spring and early summer.
Coral plant is native to mild climate zones of Mexico and is best adapted to frost-free microclimates in the Inland Empire. It grows best in well-drained loam soils with regular moisture and sunny exposures. It is a striking flowering accent choice for use in containers and raised planters where its graceful branching habit and colorful flowers can be fully displayed. Older stems can be removed near the base of the plant to manage size and stimulate new growth.
