Texas ranger + cvs

Leucophyllum frutescens

Description

The Texas ranger is large evergreen flowering shrub mounding 6-8 ft. tall and as wide. Foliage is comprised of distinctive silvery-gray leaves; showy flowers are pale to deep rose-pink. Texas ranger grows in arid regions of New Mexico, Texas and northern Mexico on well-drained limestone soils.

Texas ranger has been a popular flowering shrub in southern California for many years, particularly in southwestern style gardens where it is appreciated for its foliage and flowering color. It can be clipped and shaped for more uniform character as well as for use as a hedge or border plant. The standard size species can become too large for garden spaces; one cultivar, L. f. ‘Compacta’ has similar flowering character, tightly clustered leaves and grows into a dense mound to 5 ft. in size.
