The Red yucca has become one of the most popular flowering accent plants in warm and dry climate regions such as the Inland Empire. It is an evergreen, strap-leaf perennial with stiff arching foliage and dramatic ascending spikes of colorful flowers in spring. It is a clumping plant that grows and divides into numerous plants, reaching 2-3 ft. tall and 3-4 ft. wide. Tubular flowers are commonly coral-red with yellow throats, however many new colors are now available from nurseries.

The Red yucca and its several cultivars are easy to grow throughout the Inland Empire. They are well adapted to sun, heat, cold and summer drought, and grow on many types of soils. They are good plants for containers, on slopes, around boulders and as feature plants in Mediterranean and southwestern style gardens. They have low maintenance needs and periodic deep watering in summer. Cultivars include: H. p. ‘Yellow’ with yellow flowers, H. p. ‘Brakelights’ with candy-apple red flowers, and H. p. ‘Desert Flamenco’ with coral-pink flowers.
