Lady’s slipper is a unique succulent shrub comprised of densely packed lime-green cylindrical stems that can reach 3-4 ft. tall. Attractive orange and yellow slipper-shaped flowers provide accent color on the tops of stems in spring and fall and attract hummingbirds.
Native to the Sonoran Desert of northwestern Mexico and Baja California, Lady’s slipper is naturally adapted to heat, aridity and periods of drought. It is a popular accent plant in containers, around rocks and in small planter spaces in southwestern style gardens. It grows best in well-drained soils, with periodic summer water and protection from hot sun exposures. It is adapted to warm and frost-free inland zones in sunny microclimates where winter temperatures stay above 30°F.
