The Deodar cedar is well adapted to the normal winter rainfall moisture of the Inland Empire, particularly when planted with sufficient space to accommodate its large root system. Periodic deep summer irrigation is recommended for healthy growth and character. Historically, many trees have been planted in lawns where the additional year-around moisture helps them become very large trees.
The chart shown below provides a baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed.

Prune if needed when young to establish good long term structure. If there is no strong central leader (single tallest growth point), be sure to select one by pruning out others that are competing with it. Plant fall through spring. Prune late fall into winter. Organic mulch 3-4 inches deep under the canopy but held away from the trunk and root crown is ideal (D). These become absolutely massive trees when they are mature. Ensure it is planted in a space that has room to accommodate a mature specimen (S).
